It’s easy to take good oral health for granted if you have it but 120 million Americans are missing at least one tooth. More than 35 million people in the United States are edentulous – meaning they have none of their natural teeth.

There are many reasons people end up without teeth some of which include gum disease, cancer, or injury. Are you missing a tooth or teeth? Are you thinking about dental implant procedures for replacement?

Don’t let the dental implant procedure scare you. Read our guide for peace of mind and the information you need before your surgery.

Who Gets Dental Implants?

Dental implants work well for many people who’ve lost a tooth or teeth. You will need a dental evaluation to make sure you’re a good candidate.

You must have a healthy jaw because the implants go directly into your jawbone. How long does it take to get dental implants? The process takes about three to six months total.

There are some medical conditions that contraindicate dental implant surgery. Tell your doctor if you have any heart or other medical conditions. You’ll also need to tolerate anesthesia for the surgery.

The Dental Implant Surgeries

A finished dental implant takes several procedures. The dentist first removes the damaged tooth if it’s still there. This may mean going under light anesthesia depending on the situation.

Next, the doctor preps your jawbone for the surgery. At this stage of the process, bone grafting is sometimes necessary. If you need a bone graft, you’ll then wait for the graft to heal which can be as long as six months.

The next step is the insertion of the implant into the gumline. The implant is a metal post that looks like a screw. After placing the implant, you’ll wait again while the bone grows into the implant.

The next procedure is a minor outpatient process with only local anesthesia. That’s when the surgeon reopens the gums and screws the abutment onto the implant. It takes another couple of weeks for your gums to heal.

After healing, the surgeon attaches the new tooth to the abutment.

After Your Dental Implant Procedures

Everyone is different but most people experience some discomfort after the surgeries. You may have swelling of your gums and face as well as bruising.

Many people have pain at the site of the implant surgery and some minor bleeding. Contact your surgeon immediately if you have worsening symptoms after a few days.

Use ice packs for swelling and only eat soft foods. Always take good care of your teeth with twice-a-day brushing. Always floss and clean between your teeth with a water floss or interdental brush.
