Early Life

Oliver Taylor Hawkins was born on a cool winter’s day, February 17, 1972, in Fort Worth, Texas. Just four years later, his family decided to move to the sunny side of California, making a home in Laguna Beach.

Oliver had his brother Jason and sister Heather. His teenage years were spent walking the halls of Laguna Beach High School. During his school days, he started drumming to the beats of his music heroes, such as Stewart Copeland from The Police and Roger Taylor from Queen.

During his youth, Oliver crossed paths with Jon Davison, who would go on to be the lead singer of the famous band “Yes.” They were childhood friends, playing in bands together since they were just kids.

Their best gig was in a cover band called Heavy Industry. This band was pretty cool; they got to play at school dances and even a wedding. Later, they separated.

Oliver tried his luck in several bands, but none felt right; he thought they all sounded too much like Jane’s Addiction. His search for the right sound took him to an experimental group named Sylvia and then to playing drums for Sass Jordan.

But the good days came when he left Sass Jordan to tour with Alanis Morissette. This move opened a new chapter in his musical journey. Oliver’s love for drumming and his dedication to music shaped his path through all this.
